When I saw him this time around in India, he looked the same from what he did 8-9 years ago. The same muscular frame, the same rugged look. He was on the other side of the road, I dont think he saw me. Even if he did, he might not have recognized me. After all, I was one of the many in his life......
The year was 1999-2000. I was a slightly plump, highly impressionable teenager, excited to start college. As I went by as usual on MG road one day,I happened to pass by this new place. It was a new business and something drew me to it so strongly. There was a sudden magnetic pull and I found myself walking in through the door. And there he was behind the desk. The pull was so strong that I felt a chill go through my spine. He welcomed me in and started talking to me. But he had a frown on his face. "But you are so young...are you sure? I am used to older women".
The experience was exhilarating. He was experienced, strong and undoubtedly very skilled. Every time it was a new high. I now experienced the weakening at the knees, total breathlessness, and a fluttering heart everytime. I also saw levels of exhaustion that I hadn't seen before (at least in the first couple of times!!!). I came back glowing and happy. I was looking better than before with each time. Friends, family, people started noticing it and remarked on how much better I looked.
But all things change. His business picked up. He got busy. He did not have as much time for us. As days went on, I still saw and spoke to him but he was preoccupied with his growing business. So I started looking for others. We still met, but there was nothing like before. One day, I thought I had found someone else...and told him so. He did not seem so upset...so I left him. I did call him a few weeks later, but he was very busy. I called again later but he now had a secretary and she said he would call me.But he did not. I put him behind me and moved on. But I still thought about him.
After him I went through Raj, K and even Sarala. Then later in the US there were other women - Misty,Nicole,Karen,Viola and Jackie. Viola came the closest to being as good as him. She got me going as much as he did. But it was very shortlived. I had to move and there was no way she was going with me. I thought I had found the perfect one after years. Alas!!!
They were all wonderful in their own ways but none close to my first gym instructor - Sekhar. He got me started on working out, the basics, the warm ups, the cool downs, aerobics... the whole works! I am grateful to him for instilling the interest in me.
What were you all thinking? Time to pick your minds up off the gutter...:P.

New Blog Byline.
....is from Waters` Dark side of the moon - Eclipse with my touch thrown in. Here`s giving him credit for the excerpt.
All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy,
beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."
AMEN!
Its one of those times that life is ruled by a certain kind of music. I wake up to Floyd, then play Tracy Chapman and then David Grey!!Talk about being a creature of habit! Oh, I digress.
But, its only fitting that I dedicate my byline to one of my fave rock bands and undoubtedly one of the best of the times. Personally, they totally floored me with somber, philosophical, ponderous and cryptic lyrics (I *heart* words!!!). Equally esoteric art.. ..Of course, the music, equally great vocals and guitar.
(The previous byline on my blog was from Stairway to Heaven, which according to me is the best song ever. Again I relate to it in ways I thought never possible). And I paid tribute to the song. In my own way).

Lift Not The Painted Veil Which Those Who Live
Lift not the painted veil which those who live
Call Life: though unreal shapes be pictured there,
And it but mimic all we would believe
With colours idly spread,—behind, lurk Fear
And Hope, twin Destinies; who ever weave
Their shadows, o’er the chasm, sightless and drear.
I knew one who had lifted it—he sought,
For his lost heart was tender, things to love,
But found them not, alas! nor was there aught
The world contains, the which he could approve.
Through the unheeding many he did move,
A splendour among shadows, a bright blot
Upon this gloomy scene, a Spirit that strove
For truth, and like the Preacher found it not.
- Percy Bysshe Shelley
This was an untitled poem by Shelley which became popular because its first line is the opening line of Maugham`s Painted Veil (Also later made into a movie.).

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on, now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me

The story of two girls...
Girl A and Girl B planned on a trip to Bangalore from Chennai, just for a weekend. They wanted to meet up their guide at the IISc, but mostly they wanted to roam the streets of Commercial and Brigade road..(Girl A was the bigger clotheshorse and Shopaholic). They were going to stay at Girl A`s aunt`s place. However, in the last minute,as it usually happens,Kahani mein twist..and Girl A`s mom decided she was coming along too, to meet the Aunt and catch up with family gossip and other such stuff...much to the girls` chargin.
So,all planned and they are off. The bad part of it being tht girl B suffered a bad bout of food poisoning and was throwing up all of saturday & sunday but refused to stay put at home and went about the shopping trip and the perfunctary "meeting the professor".
Come sunday night, the girls and the mom go to get their train back to chennai. They get into the train and find their seats. A man and his family come up and say that the seats are theirs. Girl A...(the "trip manager",self proclaimed of course), insists that he is in the wrong compartment. Poor man is baffled and goes away.
By then, the train pulls out of Blore station. And the TT comes by with the man who was sent away by Girl A.
To cut a long story short, Girl A-the impeccable-trip-planner read the tickets wrong and they are on the wrong train (but still on one going to chennai, thankfully!)!!!And they are out of Banglore and they missed their actual train!!!For a fine, and much persuasion by the Girl A, mom and co-passengers (Girl B is pretty dehydrated and tired after the illness), the TT let them share seats. Girl A given a good lecture by Girl B (who`s perspective has not been lessened by the absence of nourishment and the loss of fluids) about the different options available, what they could still do etc etc & by her her mom for her carelessness...and they all take turns in sleeping on the berths.
What was the outcome of this incident??
For many months and years later, Girl A swore (and still does) that she was sure she booked them on the train that they actually travelled in. Girl B for all her part made sure she pulled Girl A`s legs as much as possible adding all possible spice to the incident and never let her live it up. It was all not too new for Girl A who was already a good target for all the teasing that went on in the chemical department and hence it was just one extra reason she was teased and did not bother much about it.Mom was distraught that her daughter was so careless and wondered if that reduced her matrimonial marketability. But her worries were unfounded as everyone came to know much later.
But about 5 years later, Girl (Woman is more like it) B blogged about it.

Dont Put Pressure ya!
Where is the baby?Where is the baby?
I need to be "upgraded" to aunt/uncle,grandma/grandpa,great granma/great granpa.
Oh,It should be a boy.A boy.
Dont touch this. Dont do that. (Replace this and that with appropriate verbs (could be nouns too) depending on your state/language/caste/creed/subcaste etc)

Dont play all the time.
Dont watch TV.

And there we go all over again.
The frequency of the repetitions again vary only with the degree of deviation of the family from streotypes or they are absolutely bohemian and not adhereing to any so called "norms of the society" which is as frequent as finding logic in a TR/Captain co-starrer (God-Forbid!!). (read none).
(*) - Denotes that the chances of hearing this increase ad infinitum if you are Tambram. Every elder you meet from Thatha, Paati to your Mom`s twice removed uncle`s daughter`s husband`s father or some such random person would have told you this in different terms.
Note: This post is a culmination of several discussions with a few friends &( inspired from a post by Krishashok) from different Indian backgrounds and realizing that our upbringing has considerable stereotypicality. (if thats a word). All pressures have not been necessarily applied to me.

The Greats According to me - I
Yet another of my greatest idols and inspirations...the multifarious, inimitable John Denver!Another I wish I had could have met or atleast listened live in concert!!Alas!I was just born in the wrong time..:(..
You know its totally something else when you can convey so much in such simple lyrics. And what a gorgeous voice! And what redundent sentences of mine - just reiterating what the world knows and what has been written over and over..but its my small tribute to one of the music greats!!
(I am NOT a big fan of Country/Folk Rock-pop..But then its double standards on my side..:D..I totlly love him!!!)
Shanghai Breezes
John Denver
It's funny how you sound as if you're right next door
when you're really half a world away
I just can't seem to find the words I'm looking for
to say the things that I want to say
I can't remember when I felt so close to you
it's almost more than I can bear
And though I seem a half a million miles from you
you're in my heart and living there
And the moon and the stars are the same ones you see
it's the same old sun up in the sky
And your voice in my ear is like heaven to me
like the breezes here in old Shanghai
There are lovers who walk hand in hand in the park
and lovers who walk all alone
There are lovers who lie unafraid in the dark
and lovers who long for home
Oh, I couldn't leave you even if I wanted to
you're in my dreams and always near
And especially when I sing the songs I wrote for you
you're in my heart and living there
And the moon and the stars are the same ones you see
it's the same old sun up in the sky
And your face in my dreams is like heaven to me
like the breezes here in old Shanghai
Shanghai breezes cool and clearing
evening's sweet caress
Shanghai breezes soft and gentle
remind me of your tenderness
And the moon and the stars are the same ones you see
it's the same old sun up in the sky
And your love in my life is like heaven to me
like the breezes here in old Shanghai
And the moon and the stars are the same ones you see
it's the same old sun up in the sky
And your love in my life is like heaven to me
like the breezes here in old Shanghai
Ladies No.1 Detective Agency!
A book by Alexander McCall Smith. An extremely good read. Simple, unpretentious style of writing.
A Botswanian woman who runs a detective agency forms the crux of the story. The book just flows smoooth with a little intrigue thrown in at places. Not any detective-thriller per se...but interesting nevertheless!
The other interesting point was the author`s (and the protagonist`s) love of Africa. No apologies, no excuses..just as is description. Of everything. Of the bushes, scrubs, deserts, poverty and water shortage. A first. Most other books that I have read all bring out the "other" side with disdain.
A book that I enjoyed throughly. Page after page. Espicially after subjecting myself to books like "Alchemy of Desire" by Tarun Tejpal. An overdose of libido.Monotony more so because of the fact that Indian authors cannot portray passion, lust etc for nuts. Either its sleazy or its cheesy and verbose. I think it all stems from the whole attitude towards the subject of sex in India...always looked upon as something taboo and cheap. Let me not get into that now. The handling of sensitive topics by Indian authors and movie makers warrants another separate post. Sorry for the digression. I got carried away..:D.
Back to Ladies No 1....,I was telling K (my Bibliotwin!!) that I loved the book. And it struck me only after he mentioned it..it WAS like reading R.K.Narayan!!

Tequila sunrise.....
Its another tequila sunrise
Starin slowly cross the sky, said goodbye
He was just a hired hand
Workin on the dreams he planned to try
The days go by
Evry night when the sun goes down
Just another lonely boy in town
And shes out runnin round
She wasnt just another woman
And I couldnt keep from comin on
Its been so long
Oh, and its a hollow feelin when
It comes down to dealin friends
It never ends
Take another shot of courage
Wonder why the right words never come
You just get numb
Its another tequila sunrise, this old world
Still looks the same,
Another frame, mm...
